Fraser Island

I truthfully don’t even know where to begin. Fraser Island was hands down my favorite part of the East Coast. I went with a group called Dingo’s and I cannot suggest going through them enough. We had an amazing tour guide named Brendo and the lads I met in car #1 made the entire experience unforgettable.

This was the itinerary for the 3 day trip. I arrived to Rainbow Beach the night before via the Premier Bus and slept in the hostel room. The hostel is cute with a little bar and 2 pools.

DAY ONE: Lake Wabby

You then wake up that morning and get going to Fraser Island! You check out of the room from the night before and place your main suitcase in storage and bring a backpack or whatever small bag you have. You get a tin plate, bowl and cup that you are responsible for keeping while on the island. You are assigned a group of around 8 people and assigned a car number. That is your group and your car for the entire 3 days so lets hope you get cool peeps. Also – make sure someone in your car has killer music downloaded for offline use. You will not have service on the island and there is an aux cord in your car. I was so fortunate to make the most awesome friends that I truly hope to see again one day.

You pre-purchase your alcohol and let them know if you have any food allergies/preferences prior to departure. The esky is packed and you are on your way. I did not realize all of the 4x4s were manual.. being American and oh so used to automatics, I was unable to drive on the island. I still had a blast but definitely wish I could have driven. You play follow the leader and take all 5 cars onto the ferry. It was about a 15 minute ferry ride and next thing you know, you say goodbye to all paved roads. Fraser Island is the biggest sand island in the world and the beach is the main highway. We then go to a little area on the island that has a milk bar and an area to set up lunch. Each car gets a basket and you are responsible for preparing your lunch and distributing the meals accordingly within your group. Lunch each day were wraps with various meats and vegetables. I told them I was pescatarian simply because I am soooo weird about meats and don’t eat ham or roast beef and just didn’t trust the whole idea. So each day for lunch I got a can of tuna to make into a wrap and I was happy as a clam. After lunch, we went to Lake Wabby. It was pretty but not the prettiest on the island. After Lake Wabby we made our way to the camp site.

The Camp Site:

The nice thing about the camp site is it is 100% dingo proof and has nice bathrooms and kitchens for being in the middle of an island with no cell phone service. The camp site is divided into 2 sections each having their own kitchen but sharing the restrooms and showers. There are a ton of tents and you bunk up with one other person. You share a kitchen with the group of cars you saw all day and another group of cars that you never got a chance to mingle with. Once returning to camp the real fun began.. the eskys are cracked open and the booze starts flowing and all 8 cars begin mingling. Most people brought goon and most were feeling like trash the next day – including me. We had a big bon fire and played drinking games.. it was a great night.

DAY TWO: Champagne pools, Maheno shipwreck, Indian Head

We woke up in the morning and left the camp site around 9am. They breathalyze the driver to ensure you are no longer over the legal limit from the night before and we are off. People in our car took turns driving but sadly I could not take the wheel and just simply moved seats in the car. We got to see some awesome champagne pools and hang there for a bit. We then drove around the island and saw a shipwreck and hiked up to Indian Head. This has to be my favorite place in all of Fraser. The views were amazing and you can clearly see the sea creatures such as turtles and sharks. We stopped in a similar place for lunch and then returned to the campsite that night. Night two was even more fun because we all knew each other even better and the camp site got wild.

DAY THREE: Lake Mckenzie, Eli Creek and return to Rainbow Beach

Lake Mckenzie is the most beautiful lake on the entire island. The water is crystal clear and the sand was to die for. The drive to and from this lake were the most exciting by far. It was quite bumpy and one way sand streets. We then went to Eli Creek where you walk up to the top with a tube or just yourself and float down the stream. The water was super clear but not as clear as Lake Mckenzie. After this our trip was sadly over. We ate lunch and got back on the ferry to Rainbow Beach. There was an after party that night at the hostel and we all got to mingle one last time before continuing up the coast.

11/10 recommend.
